Azerbaijan and Israel: how did they become so dear?

Azerbaijan and Israel have become important strategic, economic, and military allies in recent years. Of course, the fact that the Azeri people, whose majority population is Shiite Muslims, are in cahoots with the Zionists who are shedding the blood of innocent Palestinians in Gaza has attracted the attention of many. In this article, we do not intend to criticize the "friendship" between the Azeri and the Jews, but rather to dwell on the reasons for the close cooperation between the two countries.

Analysts cite Iran's foreign policy as one of the reasons for the "friendship" between the Azeri and Jewish people. The Persians are said to be trying to increase their regional influence through the Shiite population of the country, as they are located on the southern border of Azerbaijan. In response, Azerbaijan has developed various strategies to ensure its security. Official Baku has intensified military and technological cooperation with Tel Aviv as a strategic balance. This includes Azerbaijan's signing of a $1.6 billion contract with the Israeli Aerospace Industries company in 2012 and the purchase of air defense systems from the Zionists.

While Azerbaijan has chosen to cooperate closely with Israel for regional security reasons, Israel has also seen Azerbaijan as a strategic partner to increase its influence in the Middle East.

In addition, Azerbaijan's rich energy resources have also made it an attractive country for Zionists. Oil and natural gas extracted from the Caspian Sea were considered Azerbaijan's largest economic resources. Today, Azerbaijani oil has become an important source for Israel's energy needs. The Zionists have been the main buyers of Azerbaijani oil since the early 2000s. In particular, in 2016, an important agreement was signed between the officials of the two countries, through which Israel will have long-term access to the energy resources of the Caucasus. For example, the Jews purchased about 600 thousand tons of Azerbaijani oil in 2018.

It is worth noting that military cooperation is also an important factor in the friendship between the two countries. In recent years, Azerbaijan has been purchasing advanced weapons systems, drones, and missile defense technologies from the occupying Israeli state. Azerbaijan has benefited from this military assistance, especially during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict with Armenia.

During the 2020 war, Azerbaijan effectively used reconnaissance drones and other defense systems purchased from Israel. Military experts say that along with Turkish drones such as the Bayraktar TB2, Jewish spy drones and defense systems contributed to "Pashinyan's very rapid defeat."

Looking back at recent history, relations between Azerbaijan and Israel have strengthened since the collapse of the Soviet Union. After gaining independence, Azerbaijan pursued a foreign policy of closer ties with the West. Cooperation with Israel has played a key role in this process. In addition, the small Jewish community in Azerbaijan has been a cultural force that has strengthened ties between the two countries.

However, it should not be forgotten that at the heart of this alliance is Israel's strategy to increase its influence in the Middle East. At the same time, the Zionists, with the support of the United States and Western countries, continue their policy of aggression, massacre Palestinians, expel them from their homes of birth and upbringing. They even encroach on the sovereignty of neighboring countries - Lebanon and Syria - and send troops into the lands of neighboring countries.

As early as the 1990s, the Zionists realized that Azerbaijan was important not only for its energy resources, but also for its strategic location in the region. Based on this, Israel decided to establish relations with Azerbaijan in order to achieve energy security by using Azerbaijani resources, as well as to contain regional states, including Iran. This was in the interests of the United States, which wanted to "kill several birds with one stone," and its Israeli project in the Middle East.
