Chinese companies can build small NPPs in Uzbekistan
China's CNOS company can build small modular reactors in Uzbekistan. Also, cooperation is planned on uranium ore mining, processing and export of finished products with high added value, as well as further use of fuel in NPPs.
On November 4, the director of the Atomic Energy Agency Azim Ahmedkhadjaev met with the general director of China National Nuclear Corporation Overseas (CNOS, a subsidiary of CNNC) Wei Fuqi within the framework of the EXPO exhibition in Shanghai, Gazeta.uz reported.
At the end of the visit, an agreement was reached on cooperation with CNNC in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy, a detailed review of the possibilities of adopting the PRC's NPP construction experience, studying the use of Chinese small modular reactors (SRM) in Uzbekistan, and implementing further potential projects.
The parties also discussed cooperation in the field of uranium ore mining, processing, as well as expansion of production and export of finished products with high added value and subsequent use of fuel in NPPs.
The Chinese side has confirmed its interest in developing bilateral relations in all areas of nuclear technology, the report said.
In mid-October, Azim Akhmedkhadzhaev, the head of the Atomic Energy Agency, said that many global companies are actively developing their small modular reactor technologies. As an example, he pointed to the Chinese company CNNC, which is completing the construction of a small modular reactor with a capacity of 100 MW.
"They will be launched only next year. We can then follow the development of these small modular reactors. Similar efforts are underway in Korea, Japan, and the United States. But they can offer their technologies only after 2030," he said.
Otabek Amanov, director of the NPP construction directorate under the Ozatom agency, announced that it is planned to attract foreign companies to participate in the construction of a small NPP in Uzbekistan.
"A nuclear power station consists of two major components - a nuclear island and an auxiliary facility. We will, of course, implement the nuclear island with our general contractor "Atomstroyexport" ("Rosatom"). We want to somehow integrate the auxiliary facility into an international project with the participation of international companies. We are currently working on options," said Otabek Amanov.
In August, the delegation of "Ozatom" visited China and held meetings with Chinese companies that expressed their desire to participate in the project, that is, they planned to supply turbine equipment, generators and dry coolers ( a device for cooling NPP equipment without evaporating).
