The month of Shawwal and its six days of fasting

Alhamdulillah, with the grace of God, we celebrated Ramadan Eid safely. Of course, this does not mean that Ramadan is over and prayers have stopped. We are now in the month of Shawwal, which comes after Ramadan. Shawwal is the tenth month of the Hijri-lunar calendar. The virtues of this blessed month are many. Let's get acquainted with some of them below .

Alhamdulillah, we observed the blessed month of Ramadan once again. May Allah Ta'ala achieve the rewards and blessings promised in it! Thanks to the blessings of Allah Almighty, the blessings of Ramadan are still in our hearts. May the Lord of the universe make it last until the next Ramadan, let's get to this blessed month safely and enjoy its virtues many times! After all, people whose fasting in Ramadan is acceptable enjoy the blessings of this month throughout the year. God bless us all to live like this! After all, in a hadith narrated by Abu Said Khudri, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

شيام رمدان إلى رمدان كفارة ما بنهما

"...Fasting in the month of Ramadan is an atonement (for sins) until the next Ramadan" (narration of Imam Tabarani). Indeed, the one who appreciates the month of Ramadan and enjoys its virtues will definitely wait for it to come again. Because performing one prayer and eagerly waiting for the next one is the quality of a true believer. Mu'allo ibn Fazl, may God have mercy on him, says: "Salafi salih used to pray six months before the arrival of Ramadan, asking God to bring it to this month, and after Ramadan, they prayed for another six months, wishing that the prayers they performed in this blessed month would be accepted." Thus, they worry about Ramadan throughout the year. So, this is a sign of how high the grace of this blessed month is.

Here are some of them:

I. Eid al-Fitr. According to the Hijri calendar, the first day of Shawwal is Eid al-Fitr. Anas, may God bless him and grant him peace, says: When the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, came to Madinah, there were two days where the people celebrated with fun. They asked: "What are these two days?" They said: "We used to celebrate these two days in Jahiliyyah and play on them." Then he said:

God bless you

"Allah has replaced these days of yours with two days that are better than them - Qurban and Fitr" (Narrated by Imam Abu Dawud).

II. Preparation for Hajj prayer . This month is the season of preparation for Hajj. It is known that Hajj is one of the pillars of Islam. After all, the reward of a perfectly performed Hajj is paradise. To reach it is the dream of every Muslim believer. For this, it is necessary to make special preparations before the Hajj prayer, carefully study the rulings and instructions of the Shariat and apply them in practice. This month is an opportunity for that.

III. Getting married . Among our people, there is a wrong and baseless notion that "marriage cannot be held between two Eids." However, our Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, married Hazrat Aisha, may God be pleased with her, between the two Eids, in the month of Shawwal. Therefore, it is possible to have a wedding between two Eids, it is even recommended.

IV. Fasting for six days . The reason why Shawwal comes exactly after Ramadan is because it is directly related to Ramadan fasting. After all, if people who are healthy and able fast during this month, Allah has promised them many rewards. For example, it is narrated from Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him). Our Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

من شام رمدان إم اتبعه بست من شوال کان کشوم الدهر

"Whoever fasts Ramadan and then fasts six days from Shawwal, it will be as if he fasted the whole year" (narration of Imam Ibn Mojah).

According to Hadith Sharif, there are many benefits of fasting in the month of Shawwal. Let's get acquainted with them below:

1. One of the benefits of fasting on the six days of Shawwal is that a person who follows this hadith every year will earn the reward of fasting for the rest of his life. Scholars have explained that a person who fasts six days in the month of Shawwal after the Ramadan fast will be rewarded for fasting for one year: "It is known that in our Sharia, calculations are made based on the Hijri-lunar calendar. Therefore, one hijri-lunar year consists of approximately 360 days. Then, when the thirty days of Ramadan fast are multiplied by ten, 10 months, that is, 300 days will pass instead. Ten times the six-day fast of the month of Shawwal is 60 days, that is, 2 months. Add up to 360 days (one year). As a result, it is as if one has been fasting for the whole year. After all, Allah Almighty gives this blessing in the Holy Qur'an:

man̊ jāʾa biạl̊hasanaấi falahu ʿash̊ru am̊thālihā

"Whoever does (one) hasana (good deed), ten times (multiplied) will be written for him..." (Surah An'am, verse 160).

So, fasting in the month of Shawwal after Ramadan is a great virtue. The wisdom of this is that the faithful Muslims can fast at other times than Ramadan and gain even more rewards. Moreover, just as they trained themselves to fast in the month of Sha'ban in order to prepare themselves for it, before the arrival of Ramadan, they prepare themselves for fasting, both physically and spiritually, for a month in Shawwal. This is because the internal organs, which are used to fasting for a long time, are now gradually adapting to the consumption of food. Doing so is beneficial for both the human soul and body. After all, doctors don't recommend to eat suddenly in Shawvol. Perhaps they emphasize increasing food consumption gradually.

This six-day fast can be observed from the second day of Shawwal. Since the first day of Shawwal is the Eid of Ramadan, it is forbidden to fast on it. Also, it is not necessary to fast immediately after Eid al-Fitr, but it is permissible to fast during the month of Shawwal. Those who could not fast some days during the month of Ramadan, if they first perform the qaza of those days and then fast six days, the same period will be granted. However, there is no harm in fasting for six days in this month and performing the remaining qazas of Ramadan after that or in other months. But according to the scholars, it is a virtue to observe the six-day Nafl fast in the month of Shawwal, not consecutively, but two days every week. Especially if there is an eclipse on Monday and Thursday, there will be light upon light. After all, in addition to the fast observed on these days, the reward for completing the fast on those days is also recorded, insha'Allah. In addition, the virtues of this blessed month can be achieved by observing the obligatory fasts in this month.

2. One of the benefits of fasting on the six days of Shawwal is that it is an atonement for the mistakes made during the Ramadan fast. After all, the innocent Lord of the universe. Banda is not without flaws and errors. It is like the Sunnah prayer after the obligatory prayers. These Sunnahs eliminate the shortcomings of the fard. On the Day of Resurrection, a servant's lustful prayers will make up for his shortcomings in obligatory deeds. Indeed, our Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

ذن اول ما يحاسب الناس به يوم القيامة mn اعمالحم السلاة قال يقول ربنا jl وعز لملائكTH WHW ععلم انẓrwا في سلة عبديتمها ام نقها فن كان تمابة ا شيء قال انẓrwa hl lʿbdy mn tṭwʿ fẹn kān lh tṭwʿ qal atmwa lʿbdy fryḍth mn tṭwʿah ṅm twịkhẖ الاعمال عLY ثاكم

"Prayer is the first thing that will be counted among people's actions on the Day of Judgment. Our Lord Almighty knows best, but He says to the angels: "Look at the prayer of my servant, is it complete or is it defective?" , Allah: "Look, does my servant have any nafl worship?" says. If he has lustful prayers, God says: "Fill up the obligatory deeds of my servant from his lustful (prayer). Then (the rest of his) deeds will be accepted in the same way" (narration of Imam Abu Dawud).

3. One of the benefits of fasting on the six days of Shawwal is that it shows that a Muslim is not bored by fasting, but has a strong motivation for it. After all, about the wisdom of fasting in this month, Ibn Rajab, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "Getting used to fasting after the month of Ramadan is a sign that the fasting of Ramadan is accepted. Because if Allah Almighty accepts a deed of his servant, then after that he starts (other) righteous and good deeds and makes him continue."

V. Historical events . In the history of Islam, many events happened in this holy month. For example, the sources mention that the most famous of the events that took place in this month was when the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, went to Taif in the tenth year of his prophethood to invite the people of Taif to Islam, and during the journey he faced great hardships and difficulties. We did not dwell on the details of this event and other past events in order to keep the article from being too long. Those who want to get full information about them are recommended to refer to sources related to the history of Islam.

May Allah bless us all with the virtues of Ramadan and Shawwal. Amen!
