WHO chief calls on Israel to release Kamal Adwan hospital doctor

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has demanded that the Israeli government immediately release the head doctor of the Kamal Adwan Hospital in the Gaza Strip, AFP reported.

On Friday and Saturday, Israeli forces raided Kamal Adwan Hospital, one of the few medical facilities still operating in the Gaza Strip. During the attack, all patients and staff were forced to leave the hospital, and the head doctor was arrested.

"Gaza's hospitals are once again becoming a battlefield. This is a serious threat to the health system," the WHO chief said. He noted that the doctor's whereabouts are still unknown.

Israeli officials said that "20 terrorists were eliminated" and 240 militants were arrested during the attack on the Kamal Adwan Hospital. However, they did not provide information on where the detainees were taken.

The situation in Gaza

According to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus:

Kamal Advan Hospital has been closed and patients in critical condition have been sent to an Indonesian hospital, but this facility is also not fully operational.

WHO and partners have delivered medical supplies, food, and drinking water to the Indonesian hospital, but the facility is unable to accommodate more patients.

Other hospitals in Gaza, including Al-Ahli and Al-Wafa, also suffered significant damage from the attacks.

Ghebreyesus appealed to the international community to immediately stop attacks on hospitals. "People in Gaza need medical care," he stressed.
