When does the month of Ramadan begin?

The first day of the holy month of Ramadan, eagerly awaited by Muslims around the world, is expected to fall on Saturday, March 1, in 2025, based on astronomical calculations.

The 29th day of Shaban 1446 AH in the Islamic calendar corresponds to February 28, 2025. Traditionally, the start of Ramadan is confirmed by the sighting of the new crescent moon. In this regard, many Islamic countries, including Saudi Arabia and Egypt, officially observe the moon using astronomical observations.

In 2025, the crescent moon will be visible in the sky of Cairo for approximately 37 minutes, and in Mecca for 33 minutes. The duration of the daytime fast during Ramadan varies depending on the geographical location of each country.

Astronomical forecasts are not the final confirmation factor. The official decision on the beginning of Ramadan is always announced by local religious authorities and muftis based on the results of moon sightings.
