US eases sanctions on Syria
The US government has decided to ease sanctions against Syria for six months. The change is intended to improve the humanitarian situation in the country and allow humanitarian organizations and banks to operate without fear of violating US sanctions while providing aid to the country.
The new rules apply to the following areas:
Transactions with government agencies
Commercial and financial transactions are permitted under conditions established with Syrian government agencies.
Energy supply
Barriers to the sale, delivery, or storage of resources such as oil, natural gas, and electricity to Syria will be removed, a step aimed at easing energy supply challenges.
Personal money transfers
Private money transfers to Syria for non-commercial purposes were permitted, including transactions through the Central Bank of Syria.
However, any commercial or financial transactions with military and intelligence organizations are prohibited. The ban on oil imports from Syria also remains in place.
