UN: 100,000 Syrians have returned home after regime collapse
According to a statement by the United Nations' International Organization for Migration (IOM), 250,000 people have returned to their homes in Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime last week, including 100,000 Syrians living outside the country.
"In Syria, 17 million people still need assistance and 90 percent of the total population lives below the poverty line. Thousands of Syrian refugees who fled the war are now returning home, while others are assessing whether local conditions will allow them to return safely," the organization said in a statement.
It is noted that since the civil war began in 2011, Syria has witnessed widespread destruction and mass displacement, with more than 6 million Syrians having fled the country and 5.5 million internally displaced.
