The Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) of Ukraine adopted a law banning the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the country. Yaroslav Zheleznyak, a deputy of the legislative body, announced this on his Telegram channel.

"The Rada adopted a general draft law prohibiting the activities of religious organizations, in particular those related to the Russian Federation, on the territory of Ukraine. The law banning the Moscow Church is in the people," Zheleznyak wrote.

According to the parliamentarian, 265 deputies supported the document in the second reading.

The law will enter into force 30 days after its promulgation.

The deputy of the Verkhovna Rada, Alexei Goncharenko, also confirmed the information about the adoption of the bill on his Telegram channel, calling this decision "historic".

Earlier, the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches supported the banning of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

In May 2022, a council of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church was held in Kyiv, where it declared its full independence and independence from the Moscow Patriarchate.

However, the country's government and the Council of Churches of Ukraine still consider the Orthodox Church to be "pro-Russian".

For information, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church was founded on December 15, 2018 by uniting the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, as well as some hierarchs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate.
