The US withdrew from the UN Human Rights Council and UNRWA

Donald Trump has signed an executive order withdrawing the United States from the UN Human Rights Council and the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), the White House press service reported on Tuesday, February 4.

It is noted that Trump's decree also envisages a review of the United States' participation in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

"I've always felt that the United Nations has great potential. But right now it's not living up to that potential," Donald Trump said as he signed the document.

For your information, US funding for UNRWA was suspended in January 2024 under Joe Biden after Israel accused Hamas of involvement in the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.

The United States was previously UNRWA's largest donor, providing $300-400 million annually.
