The population census in Iraq has been completed: the number of Iraqis has exceeded 54 million
Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani announced the results of the first population census in 37 years on November 20-21, the official Iraqi news agency INA reported.
"Iraq's population has exceeded 45 million," Sudani said. He said that 70.3 percent of the urban population is 29.7 percent of the rural population.
It was noted that the number of families in Iraq has reached 7 million 898 thousand 588.
"The average number of families is 5.3 people. The number of men is 22 million 784 thousand 62 people or 50.1%, and the number of women is 22 million 623 thousand 833 people or 49.8%. The number of people under 15 years of age is 36.1% of the population. 60.2 percent of the population aged 15-64 increased by 3.7 percent," Sudani said.
He added that the birth rate in the country is 2.3 per thousand. This means that there are 230 children for every 100 women of childbearing age.
Sudani also noted that the country's last general population census was in 1987 and that the 1997 census did not include the Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government (KRG).
According to Iraq Body Count, an American-British non-governmental organization, about 128,000 civilians were killed in the country from 2003 to December 2007, when the US began occupying Iraq. According to the estimates of Opinion Research Business, from 946,000 to 1,120,000 Iraqis died.
