Members of the UN Security Council demanded respect for the personnel and facilities of the peacekeeping forces in Lebanon. Earlier, Israel attacked the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) facility and injured several peacekeepers.

Members of the United Nations Security Council have called on all parties to respect the personnel and facilities of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), expressing deep concern over the recent attacks on UNIFIL.

The President of the Council, the Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the UN, Pascal Berisville, made a statement to the press on the results of the closed session of the Council on the situation in Lebanon.

He noted that tensions had increased along the Blue Line between Israel and Lebanon, and that Council members had expressed grave concern over the recent attacks on UNIFIL facilities.

"KX members call for respect for UNIFIL personnel and facilities, stressing that peacekeepers and their facilities must never be targeted," he added.

Berisville also expressed concern over the death, destruction and displacement of civilians, noting the Council's support for UNIFIL.

Berisville added that Council members called on all parties to respect international humanitarian law and stressed the need to respect Security Council Resolution 1701.

Israeli attack on UNIFIL

A day ago, UNIFIL reported that two peacekeepers were wounded as a result of Israeli shelling of a watchtower in Lebanon.

It was also reported later that the Israeli army shelled the UNIFIL command headquarters in the Ras Naqura region of southern Lebanon. In addition, the Merkava tank opened fire on the UNIFIL guard tower. Two more soldiers were injured in the shooting.

According to UN Security Council Resolution 1701, the area known as the "Blue Line" should contain only weapons and military equipment belonging to the Lebanese Army and the UN Interim Peacekeeping Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). However, since 2000, almost all areas between the Litani River in southern Lebanon and the Blue Line bordering Israel have been under the strong military influence of Hezbollah.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said on December 5 that Lebanon will negotiate with Israel through the UN regarding the disputed territories on the border with Israel.
