Saudi Arabia has reopened its embassy in Syria. The embassy was closed in 2012, along with most Arab countries, after Assad did not side with the opposition in Syria.

Saudi Arabia's diplomatic mission in the Syrian capital held a ceremony to mark the resumption of operations on Monday, attended by ministers, senior Syrian officials and foreign diplomats accredited in Damascus, among others.

Saudi Arabia and Syria have agreed to restore diplomatic relations in May 2023. The Damascus embassy in Riyadh opened a few months after the normalization of relations between the countries. The Kingdom's diplomatic mission in Damascus has been operating since the beginning of 2024. In May, the King of Saudi Arabia, Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, appointed Saif bin Saud al-Mujf al as the kingdom's new ambassador to Syria.

After the start of the civil war in Syria, most of the Arab countries, unable to reach a compromise in favor of the opposition from Damascus, recalled their ambassadors and joined the economic boycott of the republic. Qatar, Saudi Arabia and several other countries provided financial and military support to armed groups that opposed the Syrian government during the conflict.

Later, some countries, including Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, normalized relations with the republic and restored the activities of diplomatic missions in Damascus.

In May 2023, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad participated in the summit of the League of Arab States held in Jeddah for the first time since 2010. A little earlier, the Council of the Arab League decided to return the Arab republic to full membership of the regional organization, which was suspended in November 2011.
