The Christmas market was closed and tram services in the city were suspended after the attack. Emergency services were called to the scene to provide first aid to the injured.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his condolences to the victims and their families and thanked the rescue services in a post on Platform X. He said the situation in Magdeburg was serious and worrying.
