Switzerland bans burqa and face veils

Starting January 1, Switzerland has banned the wearing of burqas and face masks in public places. Violators face fines of up to 1,000 francs.

Switzerland has banned the wearing of full-face veils or face masks in public. The law came into effect in a nationwide referendum in 2024. The country joins European countries such as France, Austria, Belgium, and Denmark in this rule, SwissInfo reported.

Those violating the law while covering their faces face fines of up to 1,000 Swiss francs ($1,144).

The ban does not apply to aircraft, diplomatic institutions, shrines and other sacred places.

Face coverings are permitted in places of worship and holy places.

Face coverings may be worn for health, safety, weather, or local traditions.

Face coverings are permitted for artistic and entertainment events, as well as for advertising purposes.

Face coverings may be worn with prior permission from a government agency when necessary to ensure freedom of expression or assembly. Such circumstances must not pose a threat to public safety.

Switzerland is the fifth European country to introduce such a ban. Supporters of the law say the measure is necessary to protect public safety and national traditions, but opponents say it is seen as a restriction on personal freedoms.

In Switzerland, debate continues over how the guidelines under the new law will be implemented in practice.
