Rebellion in Syria: Fierce clashes in Latakia and other cities, Shiites also involved
Yesterday, March 6, fierce clashes broke out between state security forces and supporters of the former regime in the Syrian cities of Latakia, Homs, Aleppo and Jabla. At least 30 Syrian security forces were reported killed overnight. Shiites have also joined the rebellion and taken part in the fighting.
Rebellions and conflicts
The night-time events began with former regime supporters attacking security forces in the village of Beit Ana in Latakia. Later, major clashes broke out in the areas of Hmeimim airport and the Naval Academy in Jabla. Government forces sent armored vehicles and additional military units to these areas.
Large-scale protests were also seen in the cities of Aleppo, Homs and Idlib, with thousands of people demonstrating in city squares against attacks by former regime supporters.
The role and participation of Shiites
Security forces in the city of Tartus have captured a group of Shiite militants who are said to have supported the former regime and aided the rebellion. Shiites have been actively involved in the clashes in Latakia, with some taking part in the fighting.
Syrian security forces have captured a Shiite commander named Ghias Suleiman, who was reported to have formed a group called the "Military Council for the Liberation of Syria" a few days ago. Suleiman led the Shiite uprising in the cities of Jabla and Tartus.
The Syrian government and military measures
The Syrian Ministry of Defense issued an official statement demanding the rebels surrender:
"You are scattered in the mountains and have no shelter. You have only one choice - to lay down your weapons and face justice."
The Syrian army has deployed 15,000 soldiers and police forces to Latakia and other rebel-held areas, with additional units being deployed from Jarablus, Azaz, Afrin, Manbij and Idlib.
Turkish intervention
It is also reported that the Turkish armed forces have sent a large military convoy to Idlib. Turkish aviation has carried out airstrikes on PKK/YPG targets in northern Syria. Several strategic targets in Qamishli have also been hit.
Rebellion and countermeasures
The Syrian Islamic Council has declared the fight against supporters of the former regime a duty for every Muslim. All Syrians have been called to support the state. Demonstrations and protests are expected across the country on Friday.
The dramatic events that took place overnight could signal the beginning of a new conflict in Syria. While the government has tried to provide security, rebel and Shiite movements are still ongoing.
