Prisoners in Egyptian prisons go on hunger strike

Prisoners in Egyptian prisons have begun an indefinite hunger strike to protest conditions that do not meet any humane standards.

According to a letter from Badr-3 prison, for prisoners:

- Meeting or contact with family members is prohibited;

- physical exercise and exposure to sunlight are not possible;

- no correspondence of any kind is allowed;

- medical care is in a deplorable state;

- There is constant torture.

According to the Justice Committee, at least 35 prisoners are participating in the protest, 15 of whom are in critical condition.

There has been an increase in cases of dementia, high blood sugar levels, and dangerously low blood pressure, as well as suicide, among prisoners.

The protesters include political prisoners imprisoned after the 2013 coup.

Professor Muhammad Biltaji, who has been in prison for 12 years, said:

"For eight years we have not seen the sun or the color of the sky. Not to mention our mothers, wives, or children. The suffering in Egyptian prisons is probably unmatched in any prison in the world."
