Pakistan and Afghanistan are on the brink of war
The situation in Pakistan and Afghanistan remains tense. On December 24, Pakistani airstrikes in eastern Afghanistan killed at least 46 people. The Pakistani government said the attacks targeted terrorist hideouts where Tehrik-i Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants were hiding. However, the Afghan government said most of the victims were women and children.
In response, the Taliban in Afghanistan deployed military equipment and 15,000 troops to the border. According to British media reports, the Taliban have already attacked and destroyed several Pakistani border posts. Violence on the border continues to this day.
A Taliban spokesman told the British newspaper The Telegraph that they were ready for any outcome if the situation escalated.
"Even if they have nuclear weapons, it doesn't matter to us. We know and believe that God is with us," he said.
The Pakistani government, however, blames the Afghan Taliban for terrorist attacks in the country. The TTP militant group, which operates in Pakistan and is accused of violence, is reported to have found refuge in Afghanistan. In 2024 alone, the TTP is said to have carried out 444 attacks on Pakistani security forces, killing 685 people.
According to a UN Security Council report, there are currently about 6,500 TTP militants hiding in Afghanistan. The Taliban does not recognize the group as terrorists and released them from prison after taking power.
