Netanyahu's new conditions jeopardize second phase of Gaza deal

As negotiations on the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement have begun in Israel, the Tel Aviv administration is alleged to be trying to impose new conditions that could undermine the agreement.

The first phase of the ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement between Hamas and Israel, which came into effect on January 19, will last 42 days. During this period, 1,135 Palestinians have been released from Israeli prisons, and 19 Israeli prisoners held in Gaza have been returned.

According to official Israeli figures, there are currently 73 Israeli prisoners in Gaza, half of whom are believed to be alive.

Under the agreement, negotiations on the second phase, which were supposed to begin on February 3, are being postponed. It is not yet clear how the new conditions imposed by the Netanyahu government will affect this process.
