More than 23,000 cases of whooping cough were detected in Nigeria in 17 months , and more than 1,200 people died . WHO announced earlier that the second wave of diphtheria epidemic is observed in the country.

The Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported 1,191 deaths from diphtheria-whooping cough in the past 17 months.

NCDC representative Muzzammil Gadanya said that from May 2023 to September 2024, more than 38,000 suspected cases of diphtheria were recorded in the country, of which 23,000 were confirmed.

The World Health Organization has previously reported that Nigeria is witnessing a second wave of whooping cough epidemic.

Last year, NISEF sent 9.3 million doses of vaccine to Nigeria to fight the epidemic.

Throat - this is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae (diphtheria bacillus). Mainly laryngitis, an acute infectious disease with inflammation of the mucous membranes of the throat. Depending on the location and growth of the diphtheria bacillus, it affects the throat, nose, larynx, eyes, skin, and external genitalia. The infection is transmitted through airborne droplets and can lead to death.
