Kazakh peacekeepers awarded in Syria

Kazakh peacekeepers honored in the Golan Heights

Kazakh peacekeepers participating in the UN mission in the Golan Heights have been awarded medals, the press service of the Kazakh Defense Ministry reported.

The award ceremony was held at the Fawwar base, and the peacekeepers were presented with their awards by the mission commander, Major General Anita Asma of the Ghanaian army. A total of 139 peacekeepers and 4 staff officers received UN medals.

The Kazakh contingent is working in Syria to maintain a ceasefire, secure UN bases, communicate with local residents, and clear mines. Over the past 11 months, they have defused nearly 200 unexploded ordnance and medically evacuated a UN staff member.

This is the first independent contingent from Kazakhstan, deployed to Zholon in March 2024.
