Israeli troops enter Lebanese territory, UN peacekeepers are suspended

Israeli troops, accompanied by bulldozers and infantry, have entered the Bir Shuaib neighborhood of the southern Lebanese town of Blida, the official Lebanese news agency NNA reported.

The report notes that Israeli soldiers approached within 200 meters of a Lebanese army position. Following the incident, the Lebanese army sent reinforcements to the eastern post.

Despite the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon signed on November 27, 2024, the Israeli army has been violating it regularly. Israeli troops remain at five points along the border. Air and ground attacks have caused widespread destruction in areas near the border.

UN peacekeepers also encountered obstacles

The United Nations Interim Peacekeeping Mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said that a unit on patrol in the town of Yater was stopped by individuals in civilian clothes.

It is noted that the patrol was carried out in coordination with the Lebanese army and, although it stopped for half an hour, completed its mission. However, reports circulating in local media that UNIFIL soldiers had turned weapons on the population were denied.

UNIFIL states that it is operating in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and that any interference should not be tolerated.

For your information: UNIFIL was established in 1978 at the request of the Lebanese government. According to UN Resolution 1701, adopted in 2006, Israel must withdraw behind the Blue Line, and the area up to the Litani River must be under the sole control of the Lebanese Army and UNIFIL.
