Israeli cabinet approves peace deal
The Israeli security cabinet has approved a new agreement to halt the war in the Gaza Strip and exchange prisoners with Hamas.
According to an official statement from the Israeli Prime Minister's Office, the agreement was approved after assessing political, security and humanitarian aspects. The government is scheduled to hold a meeting in the coming days to fully approve the agreement.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu outlined the US support at a security cabinet meeting. He said US President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump had agreed to support Israel's right to strike again if the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire fails.
"We have received a firm guarantee from the United States that if the negotiations fail, we will take action again to protect our security interests," Netanyahu said.
The Israeli government has announced that it will discuss new approaches and conditions in the coming days, amid ongoing efforts to peacefully resolve the conflict in Gaza.
