The Prime Minister of Ireland stated that the European Union has lost confidence in itself because it could not take a firm and unified position on the events in the Gaza Strip .

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar told reporters on Thursday before the European Union meeting in Brussels that Ireland will try to support Palestine to strengthen the final statement of the summit, IRNA reported .

He said that in the past two months, Europe's position on the events in the Gaza Strip had changed, moving closer to Ireland's long-standing position of support for Palestine. "The European Union has lost credibility because of our failure to take a strong and unified position on the issue of Palestine and Israel," he added.

The Prime Minister of Ireland emphasized the interest of European and American youth towards the Palestine issue and assessed this issue as an important political and social development in the Western bloc.

"European leaders need to be aware of this issue, we need stronger language calling for a humanitarian ceasefire (in the Gaza Strip) and justice for the Palestinians, in addition to condemning terrorism in the summit's final statement," Leo Varadkar added.

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, in his letter to the European leaders a few days ago, said: "The development summit in West Asia occupies one of the main places on the agenda. We must demand the release of all prisoners and serious attention to the alarming humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip."
