Iranian rapper sentenced to death for insulting Prophet Muhammad

Popular Iranian rapper Tatalu (Emir Hossein Maqsudlu), who was deported from Turkey, has been found guilty of insulting the Prophet Muhammad and sentenced to death in Iran. However, the decision is not yet final and can be reviewed on appeal.

According to the Iranian newspaper Etemad and The Guardian, the prosecutor's appeal against Tatalou, who was previously sentenced to five years in prison for blasphemy, was accepted. In a new trial, he was found guilty of insulting the prophet and sentenced to death.

Tatalu was arrested in Turkey in December 2023 and deported to Iran. He has been detained in Iran since then.

The artist, who combines the genres of rap, pop and R&B, achieved great popularity among young people in Iran until 2018. Some political circles supported him as a means of attracting young people. However, his songs were later accused of promoting "indecent content" and "propaganda against the state." He was also sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Tatalu released a song in support of Iran's nuclear program in 2015. He also appeared on a television program with former President Ebrahim Raisi in 2017.
