Iran sets record for number of executions

Iran's executions hit their highest level ever in 2024. According to Amnesty International, at least 997 people were executed in the country during the year. This is a 16 percent increase compared to 2023. Human rights activists believe that the actual figure may be higher because not all executions are registered.

Of those executed, 34 were women and 9 were minors. Four of the executions involved the public, while the rest were carried out in prisons.

Repression in Iran continues, not only with executions by court order, but also with punishment and torture of women for daring to walk in the street without a headscarf. International human rights organizations are seriously criticizing the situation in the country.

"The regime is afraid of its own people because the economic crisis and the repression are causing growing discontent," says BILD editor Karen von Guttenberg.
