India has banned some cough syrups for children under 4 years of age
In India, at least 12 children died from syrups containing these compounds in 2019-2020 .
banned "chlorpheniramine maleate and phenylephrine mixture" syrups and tablets used to treat colds and coughs.
According to the BBS, the ban was imposed in 2022 after at least 141 children died in countries such as Gambia, Uzbekistan, Indonesia, Cameroon and India due to cough syrups made in India.
The Drugs Control Authority of India (DCGI) has banned the use of "chlorpheniramine maleate and phenylephrine mixture" syrups and tablets, which are used to treat colds and coughs, in children below 4 years of age.
DCGI has made it mandatory for the manufacturers to put the words "not for use in children below 4 years" on the boxes of these medicines.
It is noted that at least 12 children died in India in 2019-2020 due to the use of syrups containing these compounds.
