In Russia, the price of coffins has increased by 74%
Since the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the price of coffins in Russia has increased by 74%, and in some regions it has doubled. Also, the cost of funeral services increased by 48% in 2022, 12% in 2023, and 10% in the first nine months of 2024.
Since the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the price of coffins in Russia has increased by 74 percent, The Moscow Times wrote, citing Rosstat data. In January 2022, one coffin cost about 4,437 rubles ($50), and by October 2024, its price had risen to 7,711 rubles ($80).
A rapid increase in prices began in the first months of the war and a new jump occurred after the announcement of "partial mobilization" in September 2022. The price of funeral services in Russia increased by 48% for the whole of 2022, by another 12% in 2023, and by 10% in nine months of 2024. In some regions, such as Sakhalin (181%), Omsk region (162%), Tambov region (104%) and Smolensk region (103%), coffin prices more than doubled.
It is noted that this may be directly related to the death of Russian servicemen on the Ukrainian front, as these regions lead in terms of the number of mobilized and contracted soldiers.
The increase in the price of funeral services was observed at the same time as the general increase in inflation in Russia. According to Rosstat, in November of this year, monthly inflation in the country broke all records, increasing by more than 1.5 times compared to October. The consumer price index rose 0.36 percent for the week of November 19 to November 25, up 1.15 percent on the month, and more than 8 percent on the year.
It is especially noticeable that for the first time since January 2023, the price of food products has increased by more than 10 percent.
According to the Ukrainian General Staff, since the beginning of the war, Russia has lost almost 750,000 soldiers. Most of them are dead, wounded and prisoners. In November alone, the number of victims was recorded at a record level - 45,720 people. Russian officials deny these figures. President Vladimir Putin previously stated that the losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) were five times higher than those of Russia.
