Georgia has been given the status of a candidate for joining the EU, said the President of the Council of Europe , Charles Michel .

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili explained the decision and said, "Congratulations! The Council of Europe decided to give Georgia the status of a candidate for EU membership!" - he wrote on his Facebook page.

Charles Michel also announced the EU's intention to start formal membership negotiations for Ukraine and Moldova, with Bosnia and Herzegovina "as soon as the membership criteria are sufficiently met".

"Victory for Ukraine. Victory for all of Europe . Victory motivates, inspires and strengthens," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on the X social network.

"It is a great honor for me to share the path of accession to the European Union with Ukraine and President Volodymyr Zelensky. If Ukraine had bravely resisted Russia's brutal invasion, we would not be here today. Let's go together on this path to build a stronger and more united Europe," said Moldovan President Maia Sandu, reacting to Charles Michel's statement.

Ukraine and Moldova received the EU candidate status in June last year. This decision was unanimously supported by all EU leaders at the summit in Brussels. At the same time, the leaders of the EU member states confirmed Georgia's European perspective.
