Garry Kasparov, the 13th world chess champion, was included in the list of terrorists and extremists . The relevant decision was made by Rosfinmonitoring on March 6.

In December last year, the Khamovnichesky District Court of Moscow fined the chess player 30,000 rubles for violating the law on foreign agents. In May 2023, the chess player who completed his sports career was included in the register of natural persons of foreign agents of Russia.

After being included in the list of "terrorists and extremists", banks must freeze the chess player's account numbers and funds. He also faces up to five years in prison in Russia.

In late 2023, Russia's MIA found "signs of criminality" in Kasparov and his partner Ivan Tyutrin's efforts to auction support for Russian volunteers fighting in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The auction was organized by the Free Russia Forum, which Kasparov and Tyutrin founded in 2016 to create an intellectual alternative to the current political regime in the Russian Federation. In February 2023, the Ministry of Justice of Russia added the forum to the list of undesirable organizations.

Kasparov received Croatian citizenship in 2014.
