Europe is freezing: 2024 will break the climate record

By the end of 2024, climate change will bring more serious threats to humanity. The European Union's Copernicus Climate Center (S3S) reported that November was one of the warmest on record. This further cements the fact that 2024 will be the hottest year globally.

Samantha Burgess, deputy head of S3S, said that without drastic action on climate change, it will be difficult to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. This agreement aims to protect humanity from the devastating consequences of climate change.

Winter is cold, energy shortage is high

In Europe, the winter season has already started with extreme cold and wetness. Floods were reported in Spain, and extreme rainfall was observed in Greece and Eastern Europe. At the same time, a new wave of snow is expected to enter Germany and Scotland.

The energy crisis is still plaguing Europe. A reduction in gas supplies after Russia's invasion of Ukraine is causing heating prices to remain high in EU countries. The degree of saturation of gas storages is decreasing year by year: at the beginning of December this year, the storages were only 86% full.

Global consequences

Climate change is having devastating consequences not only in Europe, but globally. According to the United Nations, half a million people die every year due to climate problems. Changes in the water cycle are causing problems such as droughts, hurricanes, wildfires, and floods.

This can cause great damage to the global economy in the future. In particular, the high costs of the heating season in Europe are expected to increase the financial difficulties of the population.

Forecasters are predicting another cold wave for Europe, with snow in Germany and Scotland. The traditionally coldest months of the year, January and February, are forecast to be slightly warmer than average.
