Dutch police allow interfaith oaths
A new procedure to modernize the oath of office in the Dutch police has come into force. According to the new rule, officers of different religious affiliations, such as Muslims, Jews, and Hindus, will now have the opportunity to swear on their holy books or religious values.
The new measure follows a decision to revise the oath system for civil servants in the Netherlands. The regulations, prepared by the Ministry of Security and Justice, will come into effect on January 1, 2025.
According to police representatives, the oath is not just a formality, but an important custom that defines the moral direction of employees. The new procedure is in harmony with the diversity of Dutch society and serves to ensure that everyone feels free and comfortable in the presence of the police.
The Dutch Police Union welcomed the changes, calling them a more equitable approach that embraces different segments of society. The union criticized the previous practice for being predominantly Christian, saying that today there is a need for a system that respects all religions.
However, the decision has sparked outrage from some right-wing parties. Geert Wilders, leader of the Party for Freedom (PVV), called it "madness," while conservative groups say it undermines traditional values.
