Court finds no anti-Semitism in Amsterdam riots

An Amsterdam court has found no anti-Semitism in a case involving street riots against fans of the Israeli Maccabi football club.

The unrest began on November 8 after violent acts by Israeli fans, including burning Palestinian flags, chanting anti-Arab slogans, and setting vehicles ablaze. This incident sparked outrage among residents of the Dutch capital, especially those who support the Palestinian people.

The court found five defendants guilty of crimes including assault and incitement to hatred. The most severe sentence was a six-month prison sentence for street beatings. One defendant was sentenced to one month in prison for tearing a Maccabi football club scarf. However, the court stressed that the actions were not motivated by anti-Semitism or terrorism.

Abushahab, 22, has been charged with attempted murder, but his case has been postponed pending a psychiatric examination. The mayor of Amsterdam has previously apologized for calling the riots an "anti-Semitic pogrom."

Investigations are also underway against 45 people, including three minors. Decisions on them will be made in subsequent court proceedings.
