Clashes continue in Sudan's capital
Armed clashes between the army and the Rapid Reaction Force (RRF) have been ongoing in the East African country of Sudan since April 2023. The conflict has severely damaged the country's infrastructure, causing widespread destruction in the education, economy, and health sectors.
The Sudanese army dominates the northern and eastern regions, while the RRF maintains a presence in the southern and western regions and in central Khartoum. The Omdurman district of the capital Khartoum is under army control, but fighting continues in Bahri district. The RRF is defending itself from high-rise buildings, where heavy fighting between snipers and artillery is taking place. The fighting has led to the displacement of civilians, and some districts have become ghost towns.
Efforts by the United States, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and France to resolve the Sudanese conflict have so far failed. According to the United Nations, the conflict has killed more than 20,000 people, displaced more than 3 million and forced 9 million to seek refuge within the country.
More than 25 million people in Sudan are in need of humanitarian assistance. In refugee camps, people are facing cold, food shortages and a lack of medical care. The situation in the country is prompting the international community to take more drastic measures to bring peace.
