Cholera epidemic in Sudan killed 852 people
The death toll from the cholera epidemic in Sudan has reached 852. 3.4 million Sudanese children are at risk . Also, more than 11 million people have become refugees due to the civil war in the country.
The Ministry of Health of Sudan reported that the total number of people infected with cholera in the country reached 29,147. According to the report, the number of people who died due to cholera epidemic reached 852 people.
In Sudan, ongoing rains and floods since June have led to a wider outbreak of cholera. The Sudanese government declared cholera an epidemic on August 12.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on October 1 that 3.4 million Sudanese children are at risk of the epidemic.
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) announced on October 5 that it had sent 1.4 million doses of cholera vaccine to Sudan.
In war-torn Sudan, outbreaks of epidemics are making life even more difficult for people at a time when the health system is ineffective.
Also, according to the UN, Sudan's civil war, mass killings, sexual violence and rampant fighting have led to an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, with more than 11 million civilians forced to flee their homes within the country alone. Representatives of UN agencies informed about this on Tuesday.
"The situation in Sudan is catastrophic. It's hard to say. Starvation, disease and sexual violence are common. This is a nightmare for the people of Sudan," said Amy Pope, head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
