Canada recognizes Palestine
Yesterday, July 30, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that his country would recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations in September. The move, which comes as the famine in Gaza worsens, is increasing pressure on Israel.
Canada will thus become the third G7 country to recognize Palestine, after France and Britain.
Karni said the decision to recognize the Palestinian state was based in part on assurances from the Palestinian Authority, which represents the Palestinian state at the UN, that it was reforming its governance and was ready to hold general elections in 2026. According to him, Hamas "should not participate" in these elections.
Israel and its closest ally, the United States, have denied Carney's statements.
For your information, the State of Palestine has been a non-member observer state of the UN General Assembly since 2012 and is recognized by two-thirds of the organization's 193 members.
