Bad mood caused $1 trillion in damage to the global economy
Worldwide, an estimated 12 billion workdays are missed each year due to "depression or anxiety."
The rise in depressive disorders around the world is reaching epidemic proportions, threatening the labor market and costing the global economy hundreds of billions of dollars each year, writes TASS, the Financial Times.
"The scale of the problem, especially among young people, is incredibly worrying. People ask us if we're seeing an increase in mental illness because people are more willing to talk about it, but the increase [in the number of disorders] is so large that it's impossible to deny that there's a real change," said Keith Pickett, a professor of epidemiology at New York University.
This trend is leading to an estimated 12 billion working days lost each year worldwide due to "depression or anxiety." This costs the global economy $1 trillion annually, the newspaper said, citing statistics from the World Health Organization and the International Labor Organization.
Indeed, Islam has important solutions to depression. Islam pays special attention not only to a person's physical but also mental health. The verses of the Quran and hadiths contain recommendations for overcoming situations that affect the human psyche, including depression. Surrendering problems to Allah and asking for His help brings peace to the human heart.
