Azerbaijan plans to sue Russia over plane crash
Baku - The Azerbaijani government is preparing to file a lawsuit against Russia in an international court over the tragedy of the AZAL Embraer E190 plane that was shot down near Grozny. According to the Azeri-Press Agency (APA), Baku is accusing Moscow of concealing the facts and demanding that Russia admit responsibility.
Protest against Moscow's position
Azerbaijan, citing a report by the Kazakh Investigative Commission, said the plane crashed as a result of an external impact. However, Rosaviatsia, which said the document "does not contain any final conclusions," has suggested that the tragedy was caused by a bird strike or an oxygen tank explosion. Baku denies these versions.
Azerbaijani experts claim that the Grozny dispatcher switched to "Gilam" mode after the plane was hit, and experts have found evidence that the aircraft was hit by a missile from aboard.
Similarities with Malaysian airliner MH17
According to APA, Baku is comparing Moscow's actions to the situation surrounding Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, which was shot down over Ukraine in 2014. At that time, Russia denied involvement in the airstrike, despite the conclusions of an international investigation.
Azerbaijan's claims
According to Azerbaijani government sources, the plane was shot down by a Russian Pantsir-S air defense system. According to evidence in Baku, a missile fragment was found among the wreckage of the plane and the fire was fired from the territory of a military unit near Grozny.
Details of the tragedy
The Embraer E190 airliner was flying from Baku to Grozny. It lost control after being hit by missiles and crashed into the Caspian Sea near the city of Aktau, Azerbaijan. The tragedy killed 38 people and injured 29.
Ilham Aliyev's position
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev demanded that Moscow take responsibility for the tragedy, accusing the Russian side of hiding the facts and spreading unfounded versions.
Appeal to the International Court of Justice
Azerbaijani officials have confirmed that they are preparing a formal lawsuit at the international court, demanding that Russia admit responsibility for the crash and not obstruct an independent investigation.
