Assad's wife wants to divorce, move to London

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's wife, Asma al-Assad, has filed for divorce and announced her intention to move to her native Britain. According to the Turkish newspaper A Haber, Asma al-Assad has contacted major legal firms to seek legal assistance so that she can continue her treatment in London.

She was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in May 2024, and her mother is said to be supportive of her daughter's desire to receive treatment in London. However, Asma is facing sanctions imposed by the European Union and Britain, making her efforts difficult. She has been banned from traveling and her assets have been frozen.

Asma is currently under tight surveillance in Moscow and has reportedly requested permission to leave Russia, but this request is still being processed. Asma Assad's future is uncertain, as political, legal and health issues continue to severely impact her decisions.
