Arrest warrant for Bashar al-Assad revoked

The French Court of Cassation on July 25, 2025, overturned the arrest warrant for Bashar Assad.

According to Franceinfo, the former Syrian president was charged with complicity in crimes against humanity and war crimes related to chemical attacks in Eastern Ghouta, Adra and Douma in August 2013.

An arrest warrant for Bashar Assad was issued in November 2023. However, the prosecutor's office has decided to review the case, as under international law, it is controversial to prosecute sitting heads of state, prime ministers, and foreign ministers in foreign courts.

In June 2024, the Paris Court of Appeal upheld the warrant. But now France's highest court has backed the prosecutor's arguments, ruling that the arrest warrant for Assad is invalid.
