Armenia and the United States sign a charter on strategic partnership
Armenia and the United States have signed a Strategic Partnership Charter. The agreement aims to further expand cooperation in the areas of security, defense, economy, and democracy. The signing ceremony, attended by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, was broadcast on the State Department's official YouTube channel.
Anthony Blinken described this document as an important step in relations between Armenia and the United States.
"We will establish a strategic partnership commission, which will take bilateral cooperation to a new level and serve to strengthen Armenia's sovereignty," he said. Armenia will also join the global coalition against the Islamic State.
Armenia's strengthening ties with the West comes against a backdrop of a cooling in relations with Russia. In 2024, Yerevan suspended its activities within the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and decided to begin the process of joining the European Union.
Relations between Moscow and Yerevan had been deteriorating steadily in 2023. Russia criticized, among other things, Armenia's ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and its military exercises with the United States. Armenia, in turn, accused Russia of not providing sufficient assistance in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
