Anti-Egyptian activist Ahmed Al-Mansour arrested in Syria
Ahmed Al-Mansour, a prominent critic of the Egyptian government, has been arrested in Syria, Al-Arabiya.net reported. Reports of Al-Mansour's disappearance emerged shortly after his father released a video denying his anti-government activities.
Al-Mansour was reportedly summoned to a meeting with the Syrian military leadership along with other leaders of the armed groups. He then disappeared. Security sources believe he was detained by Syrian intelligence and could potentially be extradited to Egypt.
Al-Mansour became known to the public for his videos from Syria in which he made threats against the Egyptian government. He announced the formation of the "January 25 Revolutionaries" movement and called for anti-government protests.
His family, particularly his father, Atif al-Mansour, has condemned his activities and denied his actions. In contrast to al-Mansour's political career, his father has insisted that his family has not faced any pressure from the Egyptian government, and that the state has covered the education costs of his son's other brother.
Ahmed Al-Mansour was involved in a number of opposition movements with negative political activities, including the Hazmoun Movement and the 2013 Rabaa al-Adawiya protests. After the overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi, he left the country and joined armed groups in Syria.
