Ancient Ural mosque returned to Muslims
A nearly 150-year-old historic cathedral mosque in Russia's Chelyabinsk region has been returned to the local Muslim community, the press service of the Chelyabinsk and Kurgan regions reported, citing the decision taken by the Rosimushchestvo organization.
The mosque is located in the city of Troitsk, Chelyabinsk Region, with a population of about 70,000. Built in 1878, this sacred building is included in the list of cultural heritage of Russia. The mosque will regain its status as a place of worship after extensive reconstruction work.
The Federal Property Management Agency reported that the mosque, which has an area of 398.4 square meters, was transferred to the Religious Administration of Muslims of the Chelyabinsk Region. It also received the right to use a 948 square meter plot of land adjacent to the building.
This step is being seen as another important decision to protect religious heritage and support religious freedom in Russia.
