Algeria submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. According to Algerian state television, the document will be voted on by the Security Council on Tuesday.
The United States opposed Algeria's initiative. US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said on Sunday that the Algerian draft resolution was "not acceptable". The diplomat hinted that Washington could use its veto power to reject the project.
It should be noted that at the moment, the International Court of Justice is considering South Africa's claim accusing Israel of violating the UN Genocide Convention due to military operations in the Gaza Strip.
