284 people were poisoned by methyl alcohol in Iran's Mozandaran province, where alcohol is prohibited, 21 of them, including 3 women, died. In some cases, negative consequences such as blindness and kidney failure were noted.

According to the Iranian Students News Network (SNN), Mozandaran Forensic Medicine Service Director General Ali Abbasi announced that 21 people died in the province due to severe poisoning caused by methyl alcohol.

Stating that 18 of the dead were men and 3 were women , Abbasi stated that consumption of methyl alcohol caused blindness, kidney failure and death.

Rasul Zafermend, the head of the treatment department of the University of Health Sciences of M o z a n d a r o n, said that 284 people were hospitalized with symptoms of poisoning due to the consumption of methyl alcohol.

An Iranian doctor said that in addition to the dead, 4 people lost their eyesight, and 81 people were connected to a dialysis machine due to kidney failure.

Because alcohol is banned in Iran, methyl alcohol is sometimes used instead of ethyl alcohol in smuggled drinks, as it is cheaper.
