2-1 – Trump leads. US appeals court halts Trump's tariff ban
A US federal appeals court has temporarily suspended a ruling by another court on a ban on import tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump. The tariffs will remain in effect during the appeal process. According to American media, the case will most likely reach the Supreme Court.
The appeals court required the parties to submit their written arguments by early June.
A day earlier, the US Federal Court of International Trade ruled to halt Trump's global tariffs, saying they had exceeded his authority.
The three-judge panel ruled that the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which Trump is relying on to justify the tariffs, does not give the president the authority to impose tariffs on the entire world.
The Manhattan-based court also noted that, under the US Constitution, the power to regulate foreign trade lies solely with Congress, and that this power cannot be limited by the president under the pretext of protecting the economy.
