10 people killed in southern US due to severe snowstorms and cold weather

Unseasonably cold weather and heavy snowstorms have killed 10 people in the southern US. Icy roads and inclement weather in the region have caused a number of accidents and serious delays in traffic.

Home fires, traffic accidents and freezing conditions were reported in Alabama, Texas and Georgia as a result of the cold and snow. Dozens of flights were canceled due to the inclement weather.
Some regions have seen record snowfall:
25 cm in Florida,
15 cm in Texas,
20 cm in Alabama.

New Orleans and Louisiana experienced their heaviest snowfall since 1895.
Louisiana climatologist Jay Grimes called the weather the worst the state has seen in 100 years. Temperatures have dropped to -12°C in some areas and are expected to continue through January 26.

State Transportation Secretary Joe Donahue urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel. Forecasters say the cold weather in the Gulf of Mexico region will return to normal later this week.
