Can insects hear the sounds of plants?
Insects can hear and respond to the sound signals that plants emit in different situations, writes the BBC.
Nature is full of unique "signals" that are beyond the human hearing range. A recent study by scientists at Tel Aviv University found that plants emit sounds when they are stressed, and these sounds affect animals.
Scientific research has shown that animals respond to sounds made by plants. For example, a female mulberry moth has been shown to avoid laying eggs on tomato plants when they hear sounds that indicate they are stressed. These are sounds that humans cannot hear - sounds that resemble the explosion of a firecracker.
It turns out that moths avoid tomato plants that are "moaning" due to dehydration. These signals help the insects choose healthy plants for their offspring.
It seems that there are hidden "ecological communications" in nature that occur through sounds that humans cannot hear.
