Sacrifice in Islam

Sacrifice in Sharia means "slaughtering a special animal at a special time with the intention of making a sacrifice."

This worship, along with zakat and the two Eid prayers, was introduced in the second year of the Hijri and was confirmed by the Quran, Sunnah, and consensus.

What does the Quran say about this?

Allah Almighty says in the second verse of Surah Al-Kawthar, “ So pray to your Lord and sacrifice .” Another verse says, “ And the camels We have made for you among the symbols of Allah (i.e., the signs of religion) ” (Surah Al-Hajj, verse 36).

What does the Prophetic Sunnah say about this?

It was narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that: “The son of Adam does no deed more beloved to Allah than shedding blood on the Day of Sacrifice. The sacrificed animal will come on the Day of Resurrection with its horns, hooves and wool. Its blood will be accepted by Allah before it reaches the ground. So, make your hearts happy with it.” (Narrated by Al-Hakim, Ibn Majah and Al-Tirmidhi)

It was narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that: “The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) slaughtered two of the best and horned sheep. I saw him placing his two feet on the neck of the animal. He would say the Basmalah and say the Takbir. Then he slaughtered both of them with his own hands.” Narrated by Imam Ahmad and a group of hadith scholars.

Muslims are unanimous in their belief that sacrifice is a religious act of worship. The hadiths also indicate that this act is the most beloved act to Allah Almighty on the Day of Sacrifice.

Moreover, sacrificing is one of the Sunnahs of Abraham, peace be upon him. Allah Almighty says about this in Surah As-Saffat, verse 107: “ And We offered him a great sacrifice .”

The wisdom behind making sacrifice an act of worship: This act is considered a form of gratitude for the blessings of Allah and for ensuring that a person passes from one year to the next safely. This act is an expiation for sins committed in actions and orders that are contrary to the Sharia. In addition, it creates abundance in the livelihood of the one who sacrifices and others.

Sacrificing an animal is not considered to be fulfilled by giving its money or value in charity. While it is permissible to do so in the case of Zakat al-Fitr to meet the needs of the poor, it is not permissible in the case of sacrifice. Imam Ahmad also said in this regard that sacrificing an animal is preferable to giving its money or value in charity.
