Pentagon: Iran launched a drone attack on a commercial ship in the Indian Ocean
The US blames Iran for a drone attack on a commercial ship near India.
The US Department of Defense (Pentagon) reported that a chemical tanker moving in the Indian Ocean was attacked by a drone launched from Iran.
According to the Pentagon's Anadolu news agency, "Chem Pluto, a Japanese ship sailing under the flag of Liberia and operated by the Netherlands, was attacked in the Indian Ocean, 370 kilometers from the coast of India.
According to the statement, the attack was carried out by a one-way attack unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) launched from Iran, and there were no casualties in the incident, and the fire on the tanker was extinguished.
The statement noted that there was no US Navy ship in the vicinity at the time of the attack, and that US Naval Forces Central Command (CENTCOM) had maintained contact with the vessel, which was on its way to its destination in India.
Although Iran has not commented on the attack, the Ambrey Maritime Security Company has shared with the BBC information that the tanker had traveled from Saudi Arabia to India and was linked to Israel.
It is reported that this is Iran's seventh attack on commercial shipping since 2021 and the first since the war in Gaza .
The Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen have threatened to target Israeli ships in the Red Sea in response to Israel's ongoing attacks on the blockaded Gaza Strip since October 7. After the Houthis took action, many shipping companies decided to stop their Red Sea voyages.
