Former Chinese official executed for corruption

Former official Li Jianping was executed on December 17 in China's Inner Mongolia region on charges of corruption and embezzlement of state funds, a local court said.

Li Jianping, a former secretary of the Communist Party Working Committee of the Hohhot Economic and Technological Development Zone, was arrested in 2022 on charges of benefiting criminal groups and embezzling government funds.

The court said Lee's crimes were "particularly serious" and his actions caused great social harm to society. The crimes had been sentenced to death in previous years, and an appeal was unsuccessful.

As a measure, the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence in early 2024. Li Jianping was officially executed on December 17.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has made the fight against corruption a top priority since coming to power, and the government says thousands of officials have been punished in the campaign.

At the same time, the opposition and international observers argue that these actions are also being used as a means to eliminate political opponents.

The death penalty for corruption is a harsh punishment in China. Some experts believe that the punishment can be effective in reducing corruption, while others say that such an approach raises the risk of human rights violations.
